About Us

Knowledge and Intelligence for the Built Environment

Building KI was created to close a critical gap in facility and construction knowledge—especially for professionals who are responsible for buildings but were never formally trained to manage them.

We believe buildings shouldn’t be mysterious, intimidating, or dependent on tribal knowledge. With the right structure, tools, and guidance, facility knowledge can be understood, documented, and passed on—clearly and consistently.

KI stands for Knowledge and Intelligence.
That principle drives everything we do.

Our Mission

To equip property managers, facility coordinators, and organizational leaders with practical building knowledge and the intelligence to use it confidently—improving safety, continuity, and decision-making across the lifecycle of a facility.

Our Roots: Building Basics for Libraries

Building KI builds on the foundation of Building Basics for Libraries, a nationally recognized platform focused on helping library professionals understand facilities, construction, maintenance, and risk—areas often overlooked in traditional training.

Through seminars, webinars, consulting, and real-world case studies, Building Basics for Libraries demonstrated a simple truth:

Most facility challenges are not technical failures—they are knowledge failures.

Building KI extends that work beyond libraries, applying the same practical, accessible approach to civic buildings, campuses, and property management environments.

Our Founder

Carlos Baffigo brings more than 30 years of experience across library leadership, facility operations, construction projects, and organizational management.

His background includes:

  • Deputy Library Director roles overseeing facilities and operations
  • Leadership of major renovation, retrofit, and capital projects
  • Direct responsibility for building maintenance, safety, and vendor management
  • Extensive collaboration with architects, engineers, contractors, and public agencies

Through decades of hands-on experience, Carlos recognized that facility management knowledge is rarely taught—but always expected. Building KI was created to make that knowledge accessible, structured, and usable for the people who need it most.

Our Philosophy

  • Buildings are strategic assets
  • Knowledge should stay with the organization
  • Documentation should support action—not sit on a shelf
  • Confidence comes from understanding, not guessing

We don’t aim to replace engineers, architects, or contractors. We help owners, managers, and staff become better stewards of their facilities.

Why Building KI Exists

Across public and private sectors, we consistently see the same challenges:

  • Critical building information scattered across emails, binders, and hard drives
  • Vendor and system knowledge lost during staff turnover
  • New property managers expected to “figure it out”
  • Emergency response slowed by uncertainty
  • Maintenance history undocumented or incomplete

Building KI was created to turn information into intelligence—by giving organizations a clear system for documenting, understanding, and managing their buildings.

What We Do

Building KI provides:

  • The Building KI Facility Profile™ – a licensed, modular facility documentation system
  • Webinars and training focused on facility fundamentals and construction literacy
  • Tools and templates that support consistent documentation
  • Onsite training and implementation support for teams and organizations

Our work is designed to be:

  • Practical (not theoretical)
  • Non-engineering focused
  • Immediately usable
  • Scalable across facilities

Who We Serve

Building KI works with:

  • New property managers and facility coordinators
  • Library systems and civic facilities
  • Municipal departments and districts
  • Schools, campuses, and community centers
  • Any organization that needs consistent, reliable facility documentation

Looking Ahead

As buildings become more complex and staffing becomes leaner, the need for clear facility knowledge systems will only grow.

Building KI is committed to helping organizations:

  • Reduce operational risk
  • Preserve institutional knowledge
  • Improve continuity during staff transitions
  • Make better, more informed facility decisions
